Finding extra-curricular activities for our children can often prove to be quite problematic at times. A lot of factors can play a part as to what options are available. Where we live, our budget, personal preferences (both ours and our children’s) and the timescales which we work around to name only a few. Circumstances will often dictate what we can get our children into but I’m certain that all of us share the same ideal that it is important both as a way to help our children, physically develop, make friends and find something of interest. Well recently a friend of mine told me how they had got their children into karate at a local place. There are so many reasons why it is such a fantastic idea that I felt like sharing some of the reasons why I think it is such a valuable activity for our kids.
Fitness & Exercise
It goes without saying that we all want our children to be fit and healthy. Living in the seemingly inescapable age of screens which we do now it can sometimes prove difficult to get children to do sports or more active things. Long gone are the days of kids playing football in the street or riding around on bikes. So getting your children to be doing something active is so valuable. Not only will it help with countering the problems with obesity which plague the contemporary world but you will be helping your children develop their bodies at a time which is so key to them and their future.
Any type of martial art will help your children to learn a form of self-defence which is so invaluable in the modern world which we live. Whilst we would often like to metaphorically wrap our children up in cotton wool and protect them from the problems of the world, in reality, this is neither possible nor sensible. Therefore, through learning a martial art such as karate, your children will be able protect themselves if the worst does come to the worst.
Alongside the extra confidence your children will gain by participating in martial arts classes and learning how to defend themselves they will also gain confidence through participating with others and seeing themselves progress at something. All karate lessons for kids, just like adult classes, will use the belt system. This gives children a clear measure of how they are developing as well as giving them goals to strive for.
There are numerous other benefits from your children learning a martial art such as breathing, focus, mental discipline and hand eye coordination to name a few. Overall I could not recommend it higher after seeing my friend’s once quiet and shy son blossom and come out of his shell after only a few weeks’ classes. If you are struggling to think of an active hobby for your children regardless of age or gender you can’t really go wrong with martial arts.
